Written by On 11 April 2018 the bilateral working holiday visa agreement signed between Brazil and France on 12 December 2013 was formally published (via Presidential Decree 9,342/2018). This was the last formal step required for the agreement to become binding within Brazil’s legal system.
The agreement allows for working visas to be issued for stays of up to one year. To obtain the visa applicants must:
- hold a valid passport;
- be aged between 18 to 30;
- aim to visit the foreign country “mainly for tourist reasons”;
- hold a return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase one;
- have a medical doctor’s certificate stating that they are in good health;
- comply with the health requirements of the host country;
- obtain health or travel insurance covering the whole duration of the stay;
- have sufficient funds for the start of the stay;
- not have a criminal record.
Visa holders will not be allowed to travel with any dependents. The visa is not renewable (it will only be issued once, regardless of the time spent by the applicant in the host country and allows for multiple entry) and cannot be converted to a permanent resident’s visa.
Once in Brazil, visa holders must be registered with the Federal Police Department and obtain their employment card and Social Security number within 30 days after arrival.
Every year Brazil and France will set annual quotas for the program and set the minimum amounts required to be held by applicants for the start of their stay.
