Brazil: Hague Industrial Designs Agreement to Become Law Soon

Written by | Intellectual Property

On 14 October 2022 Legislative Decree 150/2022 from the Brazilian Senate was published. It approves Brazil’s accession to the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs (known as the “Hague Agreement”).

The Hague Agreement was first adopted in 1925. Currently, it binds 94 countries, with China being the latest member having it enter into force within its jurisdiction (on 5 May 2022).

The Hague Agreement creates the Hague System for the International Registration of Industrial Designs (known as the “Hague System”), which allows industrial designs to be protected in multiple jurisdictions with very few formalities. Under the Hague System applicants can seek registrations of 100 designs in all 94 countries with a single application – offering huge savings for those looking to protect their industrial designs internationally.

The last step for the Hague Agreement to become Law in Brazil is the President’s signature.

This is another positive step towards Brazil’s accession to the OECD.
